Loiten Sword – Mastercraft Series

This sword replicates a weapon that was found in a large grave site in Akerhus, Norway. Like many Viking swords buried with their owners, it had been ritually “killed” before being interred. This was done by heating the blade and bending it into an “S” shape, rendering it unusable.

The exact reason the Vikings did this is lost to time, but it may have been a ritualistic way for the warrior and his sword to “die together”. Or, for practical purposes, it may have been done so the sword would be of no value if dug up by a rival or a thief.

The distinctive pommel and guard are cast in solid copper with unique symbols that possibly carried significance in the ninth and tenth centuries, as many contemporary items displayed the same artwork.

The wooden grip features leather that is dimpled using a historically authentic “wet-wrap” process, during which fine cord is tightly wrapped around a wet leather grip. When it’s dry, the cord is removed and the leather is left attractively indented and provides improved texture and grip.

The original sword had no scabbard, so we’ve created one that’s as unique as the sword, with a copper throat and chape and embossed leather that incorporates period design motifs.
