Heritage Series – Mongol Sword

NEW!!

Introducing the Heritage Series Mongol Sword by Windlass! One of our all-time favorites, reissued by Windlass Steelcrafts® with several upgrades!

Along with bows and lances, the Mongols preferred this slightly curved saber. This blade profile was extremely swift and devastating in hand-to-hand combat, whether fighting on foot or from horseback. The blade provided excellent reach, and the strong 7/32” thick blade was lightened with 14” long fullers to aid swiftness. Curved blades like this one are perfectly designed for cutting strokes, but the needle-like point makes the thrust equally deadly.

The curved sword seems to have originated on the plains of Central Asia. After the Mongols swept out of the area in the 13th century, this blade shape was quickly adopted throughout the east. Even China, whose early swords were straight, adopted this shape after being conquered by the Mongol Horde.

The hilt consists of a hardwood grip and antiqued brass furniture. The pommel and guard feature raised Mongolian decorative motifs, as do the pins.

The fancy embossed scabbard has a brass throat and chape antiqued to match the hilt. Stamped into the throat, in all its glory, is a majestic eagle in hunting mode. The Mongolians have centuries of history of hunting small game with eagles, and some tribes still practice the art.
