Heritage Series – Irish Sword
NEW!!
Introducing the Heritage Series Irish Sword by Windlass! One of our all-time favorites, reissued by Windlass Steelcrafts® with several upgrades!
The blade has improved distal taper, making the sword livelier and quicker. The scabbard now has a wooden core underneath the leather exterior. The grip features leather that is dimpled using a historically authentic “wet-wrap” process, during which fine cord is tightly wrapped around a wet leather grip. When it’s dry, the cord is removed and the leather is left attractively indented and provides improved texture and grip.
Irish smiths developed one of the most distinctive hilt designs of the medieval period: the “ring hilt”, a blend of Norse influences and Gaelic craft traditions. The ring may have held cultural or ceremonial significance, though it could also have been a practical stylistic feature to help balance the blade.
The unique pommel is comprised of a steel ring with the rounded tang tip extended through it, and the guard is arguably more unique. The ends are gracefully flared and curved and suggest fins or flippers. The blade is deeply fullered to lighten the sword without diminishing its strength.
This is the quick, powerful sword that enhanced the Irish reputation for being superb fighting men. The leather that covers the grip and scabbard is dyed a very deep green (it looks almost black in dim light).
The scabbard features a metal chape and throat with tastefully ornate cut-outs.
