Description
Civil War D-Guard Chopper
This unique replica is copied from an original knife from the Civil War that is featured on page 451 of “The Antique Bowie Knife Book” (printed in 1990, one of the first books to showcase a large collection of some of the world’s finest Bowie’s).
Most likely a Confederate knife, the blacksmith took the big, basic D-Guard Bowie grip and mated it to a bolo knife type blade, creating a chopping, short machete style workhorse. The blade has a slight distal taper to help lighten the knife without sacrificing strength at the hilt, but this is still a tool with serious heft and power. The blade has a rounded tip and hollow ground lower bevels. The wood grip is cylindrical (a very common shape for big knives of this era) and stained a very dark brown.
The original either parted ways with its sheath or never had one, but this reproduction is supplied with a nice black leather sheath that has a ring mounted belt loop, a retaining strap and a lanyard.
