16th Century Italian Cinquedea Short Sword<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Royal Armouries Sword #IX.148.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0cinquedea<\/strong>\u00a0was a characteristic type of Italian broad-bladed\u00a0short sword<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0large dagger<\/strong>, with this example in the\u00a0Royal Armouries<\/strong>\u00a0having a longer blade, dating to around\u00a01500-1530<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Cinquedea<\/strong>\u00a0were often carried as civilian sidearms, and some examples were highly decorated, this example is relatively plain and workmanlike, and could have been carried as a military sidearm by someone like an infantryman or gunner.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0impressively broad blade of 26 inches<\/strong>\u00a0has a complex transition from\u00a0three down to two fullers<\/strong>, with a thin and distally tapered\u00a0cross-section<\/strong>\u00a0which make this a very\u00a0light<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0fast<\/strong>\u00a0weapon for the size.<\/p>\n

Our replica has\u00a0faithfully copied<\/strong>\u00a0all aspects of the form and statistics,\u00a0the most interesting of which is the\u00a0unique hilt construction<\/em><\/strong>. The ingenious and iconic guard design is fabricated of various components welded together, as in the original.\u00a0The heel of the blade actually extends\u00a0completely through the guard and is riveted to it<\/em>\u00a0(see photos).\u00a0The blade heel and rivet heads are then ground flush with the guard and the whole assembly is polished. This method provides exceptional strength and durability.\u00a0The blade also has a full profile tang, with hardwood grip scales and decorative brass filigree inlaid rivets.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0sheath<\/strong>\u00a0is made with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features ornate cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.<\/p>\n
