14th Century Hand-and-a-Half Sword<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Royal Armouries Sword #IX.915<\/strong><\/p>\n

An imposingly\u00a0large<\/strong>\u00a0hand-and-a-half sword<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0longsword<\/strong>, probably of the\u00a0late-14th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The precise origin of this\u00a0European<\/strong>\u00a0sword<\/strong>\u00a0is unknown, but from the markings it is likely to be\u00a0German<\/strong>\u00a0or possibly\u00a0Italian<\/strong>. It found its way into the\u00a0Arsenal of Alexandria<\/strong>\u00a0either as a diplomatic gift, war booty or as a tribute object from the\u00a0Kingdom of Cyprus<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0Sultanate of Egypt<\/strong>, where it was inscribed with\u00a0Arabic<\/strong>\u00a0text<\/strong>. From there it made its way into at least one\u00a0private collection<\/strong>, before subsequently being acquired by the\u00a0Royal Armouries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This big knightly sword features a broad and powerful\u00a0Oakeshott Type XVI<\/strong>\u00a0blade of\u00a038<\/strong>\u00a0inches<\/strong>. This is quite a heavy sword by the standards of the day, due to the length and breadth of the blade, but is\u00a0wonderfully balanced<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to the distal taper, long grip and large pommel. Similar swords to this can be seen extensively in late-14th and early-15th century art, including manuscripts and also knightly effigies and brasses.<\/p>\n

Such swords were popular at this time all over Europe, from England to Italy, from Portugal to Poland, and they are featured in a number of contemporary fighting treatises like\u00a0Fior di Battaglia by Fiore delli Liberi (1410)<\/strong>. They were used on foot and mounted, in armour and unarmoured, with one hand or two-handed. This example is an especially powerful cutting weapon and less specialised tothe thrust than some other longswords of the time.<\/p>\n

Our replica closely matches the original in all aspects of form, measurements and manufacture.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0sheath<\/strong>\u00a0is made with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features ornate cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.<\/p>\n
