Late 15th Century Arming Sword<\/strong><\/p>\n

Royal Armouries Sword #IX.1426. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This arming sword in the\u00a0Royal Armouries<\/strong>\u00a0Collection<\/strong>\u00a0dates to the\u00a0late-15th century<\/strong>\u00a0and is likely to be of\u00a0English<\/strong>\u00a0provenance.<\/p>\n

This type of sword is a medium-to-high status sidearm of the\u00a0late-15th century<\/strong>\u00a0and into the\u00a0early 16th century<\/strong>, and would have been worn both with and without armour. It would have been a knightly backup weapon, used in combat both on foot and mounted.<\/p>\n

This sword shares some obvious similarities with the\u00a0Westminster Abbey sword<\/strong>, which has been long associated with\u00a0Henry V<\/strong>\u00a0(but now believed to be from\u00a0Henry VII’s funeral achievements<\/strong>). It also shares a number of close similarities with other swords from English churches, and from representations of swords on English funeral effigies and brasses. Due to the state of preservation, it has been suggested that this sword may indeed have been taken from an English church monument in past centuries, where it was likely originally deposited in\u00a0the late-15th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our replica is a precise, faithful replica, manufactured traditionally in very similar ways to the original. It features a robust cut and thrust\u00a0Oakeshott Type XVIII<\/strong>\u00a0blade of just over\u00a030 inches<\/strong>, long curved quillons with characteristic terminals, short\u00a0grip<\/strong>\u00a0and prominent solid wheel\u00a0pommel<\/strong>. The original has some unusual floral engraving at the base of the blade, which we have not replicated, because unfortunately on the original it is too damaged to reproduce with any certainty.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0sheath<\/strong>\u00a0is made with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features ornate cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.<\/p>\n

Made by Windlass Steelcrafts<\/strong>, the original can be seen in the Royal Armouries Collection, Object Number IX.1426.<\/strong><\/p>\n
