British cavalry officer John Le Marchant attentively made drawings of the weapons carried by the\u00a0<strong>Austrian cavalry<\/strong>\u00a0during the\u00a0<strong>Low Countries Campaign in 1793-95<\/strong>, and likely was involved in the recommendation of this pattern to his superiors. Notable for its use at\u00a0<strong>Salamanca<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Waterloo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Technically the 1796 heavy cavalry sword is a backsword, defined as a sword with a straight blade with one cutting edge and a spine (the &#8220;back&#8221;) thickened for most of its length to give added strength. In fact, this is not a delicately maneuverable sword by any stretch of the imagination, and gained favor as a bludgeoning weapon. Troops also used the\u00a0<strong>guard<\/strong>\u00a0as a knuckle duster.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>blade<\/strong>\u00a0is forged with a single broad\u00a0<strong>fuller<\/strong>\u00a0on each side. The\u00a0<strong>grip<\/strong>\u00a0is of ribbed leather.
