The Oakeshott typology was created by historian and illustrator\u00a0<strong>Ewart Oakeshott<\/strong>\u00a0as a way to define and catalogue the medieval sword based on physical form. It categorizes the swords of the European Middle Ages (roughly 11th to 15th centuries) into 13 main types labelled X to XXII. Oakeshott introduced it in his treatise\u00a0<strong><em>The Archaeology of Weapons: Arms and Armour from Prehistory to the Age of Chivalry<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>1960<\/strong>. The system is a continuation of\u00a0<strong>Jan Petersen&#8217;s typology of the Viking sword<\/strong>, introduced in\u00a0<strong><em>De Norske<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<strong>Vikingsverd<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;<strong><em>The Norwegian Viking Swords<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;,\u00a0<strong>1919<\/strong>), modified in\u00a0<strong>1927<\/strong>\u00a0by R. E. M. Wheeler into a typology of nine types labelled I to IX.<br \/>\nThe long and\u00a0<strong>wide fuller<\/strong>\u00a0on this\u00a0<strong>blade<\/strong>\u00a0lightens the overall sword and make it possible to deliver fast and shearing cuts, capable of cutting through the mail and padding that were worn during the period. The long\u00a0<strong>guard<\/strong>\u00a0offers good protection from an opponent&#8217;s shield or blade, while the classic wheel\u00a0<strong>pommel<\/strong>\u00a0brings the sword very nicely into balance.
