This sword<\/strong> replicates a weapon<\/strong> that was found in a large grave site in Akerhus<\/strong>, Norway<\/strong>. Like many Viking swords<\/strong> buried with their owners, it had been ritually \u201ckilled<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> before being interred<\/strong>. This was done by heating the blade and bending it into an \u201cS\u201d shape<\/strong>, rendering it unusable.<\/p>\n

The exact reason the Vikings<\/strong> did this is lost to time, but it may have been a ritualistic way<\/strong> for the warrior<\/strong> and his sword<\/strong> to \u201cdie together<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. Or, for practical purposes, it may have been done so the sword<\/strong> would be of no value<\/strong> if dug up by a rival or a thief.<\/p>\n

The distinctive pommel<\/strong> and guard<\/strong> are cast in solid copper<\/strong> with unique symbols<\/strong> that possibly carried significance in the ninth and tenth centuries<\/strong>, as many contemporary items displayed the same artwork<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The wooden grip<\/strong> features leather<\/strong> that is dimpled<\/strong> using a historically authentic “wet-wrap<\/em><\/strong>” process<\/strong>, during which fine cord<\/strong> is tightly wrapped<\/strong> around a wet leather grip<\/strong>. When it’s dry, the cord<\/strong> is removed and the leather<\/strong> is left attractively indented and provides improved texture<\/strong> and grip<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The original sword had no scabbard<\/strong>, so we\u2019ve created one<\/strong> that\u2019s as unique<\/strong> as the sword<\/strong>, with a copper throat and chape<\/strong> and embossed leather<\/strong> that incorporates period design motifs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
