Here\u2019s a Civil War<\/strong> era Bowie<\/strong> that was not welcome in any Confederate\u2019s home, as the offensive inscription on the blade was intended for them! This \u201cvile knife<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, as the southerners called it, is copied from a unique early American knife<\/strong> featured on page 52<\/strong> of\u00a0The Antique Bowie Knife Book<\/em><\/strong>. Printed in 1990<\/strong>, it is one of the first books to showcase a large collection<\/strong> of some of the world\u2019s finest and rarest Bowies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cutler<\/strong> John Chevalier<\/strong> sold his wares on Broadway<\/strong> in New York City<\/strong>, a long way from the death and destruction of the fevered battles of the war. Famous for his surgical<\/strong> instruments<\/strong>, he made a unique grip<\/strong> pattern on his knives using brass<\/strong> with checkered<\/strong> ebony<\/strong>. Originals of this Union loyalist knife are scarce. We made our replica just like the original<\/strong>, with a high-carbon steel<\/strong> clip point<\/strong> blade<\/strong> and a grip<\/strong> made with four pieces of<\/strong> hardwood<\/strong> nestled into the four quadrants of the brass handle frame<\/strong>.\u00a0 The blade<\/strong> is inscribed “Death to Traitors<\/em><\/strong>“.\u00a0 The wood<\/strong> scales<\/strong> are checkered<\/strong> and stained<\/strong> to match the Ebony wood<\/strong> of the original. (Many species of Ebony are now classified as threatened and are illegal to sell)<\/p>\n

The sheath<\/strong> of the original didn\u2019t survive<\/strong>, so we\u2019ve re-created<\/strong> a period style one with a brass throat and chape<\/strong>, and an embossed diamond pattern on the leather<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
