The original sword that this replica is based on resides in the French Army Museum<\/strong> in Paris<\/strong> (Mus\u00e9e de l’Arm\u00e9e<\/strong>) and was crafted in Western Europe<\/strong> between 1300<\/strong> and 1350<\/strong>, during a transitional period in medieval warfare<\/strong> when mail armor was still dominant but was gradually being reinforced by additional plates.<\/p>\n

Swords of this type were typically used in conjunction with a buckler or shield, making them versatile sidearms<\/strong> both on the battlefield and in civilian settings.<\/p>\n

This particular sword is a faithful reproduction<\/strong>, carefully crafted according to the exact measurements of the original. The blade<\/strong> has a lenticular cross-section<\/strong> with a fuller<\/strong> that terminates two-thirds of the blade\u2019s length. The sword is categorized as Type XIV<\/strong>, due to its relatively short blade<\/strong>, which features a stout and wide profile tapering to a strong<\/strong>, thrusting point<\/strong>. This stiff blade<\/strong> is well-suited for both cutting and thrusting, while its considerable width aids in binding and displacing an opponent\u2019s blade. While most Type XIV swords have curved crossguards<\/strong> and wheel pommels<\/strong>, this one features a straight guard (Oakeshott Style 2<\/strong>) and a spherical pommel<\/strong> topped with a peen block<\/strong>. The peen block serves a practical purpose, providing additional length to the tang<\/strong>. This design feature allows for easier disassembly or future modifications to the sword, ensuring longevity and adaptability.<\/p>\n

Its most distinctive feature is the brass pommel<\/strong> shaped like a faceted sphere<\/strong>. Although it doesn’t exactly conform to a single Oakeshott type, it is most similar to Type R pommels<\/strong> and is reminiscent of those seen later on basket-hilted swords, such as those recovered from the Mary Rose shipwreck.<\/p>\n

The sword’s aesthetic choices further enhance its appearance. The combination of the red grip and scabbard<\/strong> with the yellow brass pommel<\/strong> evokes the image of a high-status weapon fit for a nobleman<\/strong>. This attention to detail extends to the brass chape<\/strong>, where the finial mirrors the pommel, creating a cohesive and elegant design.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it\u2019s named The Seneschal<\/strong>, (le S\u00e9n\u00e9schal<\/strong> was a noble household officer of the king of France, was a senior position filled by a court appointment within a royal, ducal, or noble household during the Middle Ages and early Modern period) reflecting the authority and importance of a key figure in the medieval hierarchy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
